AGC Glass Europe: Brings Sustainability to the whole Company
During Celemi Sustainability™, participants get to experience the greatest challenge in business today by stepping into the driving seat of a sustainability transformation.
“Really great tool, which makes it possible to put sustainability concepts into practice.” – participant
The Scenario
AGC’s Sustainability team noticed that they did not have the company-wide understanding of sustainability that they wanted. The head of the Sustainability department Marc Foguenne, decided to try Celemi Sustainability™ to raise awareness across all roles of the company, beyond just the Sustainability team. The main goals were awareness and engagement across the entire company. One thing that drew AGC to Celemi’s simulation was the fact that it focuses on people, planet, and profit, rather than only focusing on greenhouse gas emissions. AGC was happy to find a simulation with a more holistic approach to sustainability, which fit in more with their vision as a company.
“Now I understand it’s much more complex and a much broader topic than what I thought at first. The purpose of this training for me is to explain that this topic is related to people, planet, and profit, and not just climate change as you would think at first. The level of awareness of most participants is raised for sure.” explains Stéphanie Jadoul, Talent Development Lead at AGC.
The Experience
A group of 30 people from all different departments took part in the simulation. It was important to have a balanced approach between both the simulation itself and internal insights on what the company’s own sustainability transformation looked like. Because of this, presentations about AGC’s own sustainability strategy were combined into sections of the learning simulation. This helped participants apply knowledge from the simulation to more specific details about
their own company, and vice versa.
“It is in the conversations between participants where the real value is. Even more time could have been used for analysis, dialogues and decision making if it was available. The participants were very engaged in debating which sustainability actions would be most beneficial to the company’s success and to the planet.“ said Michael Gieser, Senior Facilitator and Business Coach.
The Outcome
At the beginning of the simulation, our survey showed that people had a good understanding of how to be more sustainable in their personal lives, but when Michael asked them if they were confused by sustainability in business, everyone raised their hand. At the end of the simulation, all participants confirmed that sustainability as part of a thriving business had now become crystal clear.
Participants reported a much stronger understanding of sustainability after they had gone through the simulation than before. Many also felt a sense of purpose and pride in their company after learning about the actions they were taking to help.
Working together on this simulation allowed for improved connections between different departments. It created a synergy between different parts of the company that don’t usually work together. This simulation made people in all different roles of the company aware of what the sustainability department was doing, and what they could all do to contribute.
AGC plans to keep this simulation in the training catalog for employees to request in the future. They are excited to share it with even more different roles throughout the company.
When asked what his main takeaways were as a facilitator, Michael Gieser mentioned that people in all different departments of a company have a larger role in a sustainability transformation than any of them would have thought at first. The experiential nature of the simulation helped everyone to learn this from experience, rather than just being told how to help.
